Levitated Mass

September 4th, 2014

Genre: Documentary

Release Year: 2014

Runtime: 115

Language: English

Director: Doug Pray

Plot: LEVITATED MASS is Doug Pray’s new documentary about a two-story tall, 340-ton, granite boulder that was moved from a quarry in Riverside to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and mounted atop the walls of a gigantic slot in the earth. The massive artwork, titled Levitated Mass, is the latest ‘land sculpture’ by one of America’s most exciting and misunderstood artists, Michael Heizer. Heizer’s sculpture references the expanse of art history — from ancient traditions of megalithic stones to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering.

The boulder’s 105-mile journey from quarry to museum attracted international media attention and challenged the imagination of thousands of Southern Californians over 10 nights as it crawled through 22 cities on a football-field length, 206-wheeled trailer. The film captures this spectacle while weaving together the dramatic story of the reclusive Heizer, the ambitions of a major metropolitan museum, and the public’s wild reactions to this massive display of modern yet eerily timeless conceptual art.

Genre: Comedy

Release Year: 2014

Runtime: 122

Language: English

Director: Pete Shanel

Plot: Leo and Nick, college friends now estranged, meet again after the funeral of their friend James. Seemingly polar opposites, straight laced east-coast family man Leo and flakey would-be Hollywood movie producer Nick embark on a series of outrageous nocturnal adventures. With a knowing nod to the worst of L.A. stereotypes, Nick pulls Leo along on what becomes an homage to debauchery. Ably assisted by Trish and Claire, a pair of drug-loving young beauties they meet along the way and hook up with for a while, Leo and Nick’s journey is both poignant and hilarious. With a wealth of unexpected and thoroughly engaging plot twists and turns, this is one of those rare films that strikes just the right balance between comedy and pathos. Pitch perfect casting, snappy dialogue, sly observations, seamless editing and an evocative score make this a “must see” movie. Sweet, gentle, hilarious and thought provoking. -Barbara Pokras A.C.E(Film Reviewer – Woodstock Film Festival)
